Caregiver Mobile App Development
The caregiver app is the only software your field staff touch every day. If it's slow, or it drains their battery, or it asks them to type on a cracked screen in a parking lot, they'll stop using it — and your visit data gets worse.
We build caregiver apps that hold up in the field.
What we build
GPS check-in and check-out
With geofencing and configurable tolerance, so a missed signal doesn't become a missed visit.
Task lists and care notes
Structured so the office gets usable records, not free-text that nobody can report on.
Offline capture
Visits are recorded locally and synced when the signal returns.
Photo and signature capture
For documentation that needs evidence attached to it.
Shift details and directions
Client address, access notes, care instructions, and contact information in one place.
Messaging with the office
So a question doesn't turn into a phone call the coordinator can't take.
Medication reminders
Reminders and documentation of what was administered, with an audit trail.
Mileage and travel time
Captured automatically so reimbursement isn't reconstructed from memory.
Schedule change notifications
Push alerts when a shift is added, moved, or covered.
Why caregiver apps fail after launch
These are the failure modes we design against.
- Dead zones. Caregivers work in basements, rural homes, and apartment towers. Offline-first capture with conflict resolution on sync isn't optional.
- Battery drain. A GPS strategy that runs the radio all day gets the app deleted within a week.
- Old devices. Many caregivers work on aging Android phones on prepaid plans. The app has to run on a hardware floor you can state out loud.
- Language. Not every caregiver reads English comfortably. Icons over text, and real localization.
- Trust. If a caregiver thinks the app is tracking them off the clock, they'll find a workaround. Clear boundaries and a visible log prevent that.
- Onboarding. If a new hire can't complete a visit in the app within ten minutes of installing it, they won't.
- Physical reality. One hand, gloves, bad light, reading glasses. Large tap targets and as little typing as possible.
- Office load. Every field feature creates office work. If it isn't reported on, it shouldn't be collected.
PHI on a phone
Care notes, photos, and client details are PHI, so HIPAA applies to the app itself — not just the backend. We keep an audit trail on every edit, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and hold PHI on the device only as long as the visit actually requires.
On the device side, we design for the reality that caregivers use their own phones. That means app-level data protection and remote wipe of app data, without putting device management on somebody's personal phone.
How it's built
- One codebase for iOS and Android, built with React Native
- An offline-first data layer with background sync
- Native location and camera modules where the cross-platform layer isn't enough
- Backend and integrations handled by the same team, so the app and the office system stay in sync
How we run it
- Discovery — we walk through a caregiver's actual day, visit by visit
- Prototype — the check-in and check-out flow, testable on real phones, early
- Build — two-week increments
- Field pilot — a small group of caregivers first, then rollout
Experience, stated plainly
Caregiver apps we've built are running with care operators in China, including platforms covering 300+ caregivers. We're early in the US market. What we'd want to see before committing to a timeline is your device mix and your state's verification requirements.
Common questions
Does it work offline?
Yes. Visits are captured locally and synced when the device reconnects, with conflict handling when the same visit is edited in two places.
Our caregivers use personal phones. Can you support that?
That's the common case, and we design for it. App-level data protection and remote wipe of app data only — no device management on a personal phone.
Will it work on older Android devices?
We'll agree on a device floor with you during discovery and test against it before launch.
Can the app feed our EVV aggregator?
Yes. We build visit verification into the app and handle submission to your state's aggregator. More on EVV integration.
How long does it take?
A caregiver app typically runs 10–14 weeks to a field pilot, depending on the device floor you need and how much of the office side is included.
